19th Century French Mahogany and Brass Partner's Desk

This handsome French partners' desk is lavishly trimmed in brass—with inset brass fluting on the pilasters and brass molding around each drawer, the base panels, and the top. It is made with a full complement of nine drawers on each side and pull-out writing slides in each end.

The locking system is interesting: The only drawer locks are on the top center drawer of each side, but by pushing the drawers in fully, the system is engaged and secures that side of the desk. Only one key is required to lock the entire front or rear bank of storage. Additionally, the top right-hand drawer in each pedestal has a lockable compartment with a sliding lid.

The finish has been repolished and the leather writing surfaces restored; some of the brass handles are also replaced.

Provenance: The estate of Henry Luce (1898-1967) publisher of Time, Life and Fortune magazines and founder of Time, Inc.

George III Period English/Scottish
mahogany single armchair.

Good mahogany armchairs are extremely difficult to find, and this is a very attractive example. The seat is wide and deep, as an armchair should be, and the fine Chippendale-form crest rail has the carved fans often identified with Scottish furniture. The well-shaped and comfortable arms end in a bold carved scroll. There is a restoration to the mounting point of one arm, and one front leg has a repaired crack.

George III Period mahogany
tripod table with round top

Very good mid 18th century occasional or breakfast table with a bold turned stem and a nicely figured one piece tilting top. English tripod tables seldom used figured wood in the tops, the cabinet makers instead having preferred straight-grained mahogany. This is a very pleasing exception, and with good color as well. One minor restoration has been made to the mounting block under the top, otherwise all original. Top is straight and flat, legs and stem undamaged. 28 1/4" High, 32" diam top.
